Where Did My Money Go? Finding Your Money Leaks

Many people spend a great deal of money daily without knowing exactly where it went. They can tell you what their basic monthly expenses is, but have no idea where the rest went.

Here's how to find out:

Start TODAY!
Get an envelope.
For every purchase over .50 get a receipt and place it in your envelope. Write down the purchase on the envelope.
Do this for two weeks.

You'll soon see your hard earned dollars is being spent on small petty items.

entertainment
snacks & fast food
restaurant dining
newspapers & magazines

A couple of dollars here and a few dollars there add up FAST!

For example, here is what I was doing daily:
Stopped on way to work: $1.49 on a 16 oz soda and $1.99 breakfast sandwich
Lunch: Fast food meal $5-6
Two or three times a week I was also buying newspapers and magazines. (I cannot believe how the price of magazines has went up in the last 3 years.)
I found I was spending $40-$50 A WEEK on this! That's $200 a month.

AND

My husband was even worse. One breakfast sandwich wasnt enough. Working outside in the heat he was also buying 3-4 sodas/teas/waters. We were spending close to $600 a month on this "stuff" and nothing to show for it.

Keep repeating the question: "Is this where I WANT my money to go?" "Is this stuff really worth it?"

To plug these leaks we did a few things.
1) Started packing our lunches. I made sandwiches, bathces of burritos & hamburgers and froze, and we learned to love leftovers instead of throwing them out!
2) I bought a 2 litre of pop to take to my office job for $1.25 and it would last 3 or 4 days. I bought a drink jug cooler from a thrift store and hubby either took water or tea made at home.
3) My new years resolution 2 years ago was to not buy any more magazines. Although I didnt completely quit buying, I have cut this back 90%. Some I can read on line. I watched for FREE subscriptions or highly discounted subscriptions. I've even requested subscriptions as gifts when someone asks what I want.
4) FREE entertainment: I watch for FREE dvd rentals. Redbox gives a free code once a month. Our satellite provider offered two FREE movies this month. We went to a free art show this past weekend and had a great time.

We went from spending $600 a month to $150.

Everyone wants to have some spending money to spend any way they want. You've worked hard and earned it. We gave ourselves $10 each for the week. Both of us usually spent our money and treated ourselves out to lunch on Fridays and had money leftover.

By doing this tracking method, you'll be surprised at how much you have spent on things that don't really matter very much to you and that don't have lasting value.

How do I know how much to stockpile of an item...

This is the question I get asked the most.

The way to stocking a pantry the frugal way: Buy when it’s on sale! Use your coupons when the item is on sale to get rock bottom prices. Buy enough to keep you in stock until the sale cycles again. Doing so, you will never pay full price again.

Here is how I figure out how much of what food is reasonable for my family.

1. Write down your families favorite meals and list ingredients needed to prepare. I had 17 that I found I cooked regularly. Some are only served during the summer, some only during the winter.

2. 80% of your meals will be prepared from your stockpile. 80% of 365 days a year is 292. Then divide 292 by the amount of favorite meals you wrote down. 292 divided by 17 is 17.176. I need 18 of each of the ingredients for each of the 17 meals throughout a year. Ingredients used in more than one dish will require more, such as tomato sauce. I use it in chili, spaghetti, beef stew. So for a year I would need 54 cans.

This method is from the Utah State University Cooperative Extension office. You can download their workbook, complete with instructions and worksheets to make this easy to do. They also have inventory sheets so you will know at all times how much of what you have and how much you need. It's a really great publication that I have used for several years. Just click here.

Chicken & Noodles

Chicken & Egg Noodles

Broth:
4 skinless boneless chicken breast (or any left over chicken), cut into small pieces
1 32 oz Chicken Broth (I use Progresso)
1 can of Cream of Celery Soup (I will only use Campbells brand)
2 quarts of water

Use a large pot and add all ingredients above (stir in soup really good!) and cook chicken on low so evaporation of liquid is minimal if using raw chicken. If using leftover cooked chicken then turn on low to heat up.

While chicken is cooking, make your noodles:

2 cups flour
2 large eggs
2 1/2 eggshell of milk

*The milk makes the noodles so tender they melt in your mouth.

Measure flour out on your work surface (or if you’re scared, dump it into a bowl) making a dent in the center. Whisk eggs in a bowl and pour in the center of the flour.

You want to add the milk in stages. Fill 1/2 of an eggshell of milk and add to eggs in the center, stir using a fork. Add 2nd ½ eggshell of milk and work into dough. You may need a little more milk. Work into dough until it’s slightly sticky and forms a ball.

Divide dough into 3 equal parts. Flour your surface and roll out the dough until paper thin. This is important, when cooked they swell so you want the dough really thin. Cut the dough into strips. I don’t like my noodles very wide or very long. It’s your choice. I use a pizza cutter to cut mine, my DMIL uses a knife. It is okay if the noodles are not perfect.

If your work surface is big enough to just leave them lying there, move on to the second piece of dough, rolling it out and cutting. My surface isn’t big enough so I transfer my cut noodles to a big cookie sheet, single layer and set out of the way while I cut the rest.

Bring broth mixture to a rapid boil. Add just a few noodles at a time and stir. Add a few more and stir. Constantly stir noodles while adding. Repeat. It is important to add the noodles a few at a time so they do not stick together and form a large paste ball.

Once all noodles are added, turn down heat and keep broth mixture at a low boil and cook noodles until tender (approx. 1/2 hour). Stir frequently while cooking to prevent sticking.

The noodles will thicken up as they cook.

I can compost that?

I can compost that?

Here's a list of items that can be thrown in your compost pile. Some of you won't have some of these items, and then you will have an abundance of another item. For example, I rarely have freezer burned vegetables and fruit nor horse manure but I have all the grass and chicken manure I can use!

Paper napkins, cups, plates, paper bags (brown, fast food restaurant, take outs)
Paper: newspaper, office, paper towels, junk mail, old receipts/bills, Christmas/greeting cards & envelopes
Cardboard cereal boxes (shredded)

Sewing scraps: Thread, material, Burlap, felt, (the smaller the better)
Hair: human (don’t forget about the electric razor), cat, dog, horse
Lint from: clothes dryer, under beds, behind refrigerator, vacuum cleaner cup/bag contents
cotton balls/swabs: cardboard/paper sticks only)

Grass clippings, leaves & pine needles
Weeds
Hay & Straw

Vegetable plants/vines, Corn stalks & cobs (takes a long time to decompose)
Vegetables from garden that are poor quality for eating (blossom rotted tomatoes,
Freezer-burned vegetables, fruit, fish
Spoiled canned fruits and vegetables

Manures: chicken, horse, cow, goat, hog, rabbit
Bird cage debris (seed hulls, paper liners, feathers)

Kitchen scraps: potato peelings, stale bread, burnt toast, bread crumbs/crust, tea bags/grounds, coffee grounds, rinds: watermelon/grapefruit/cantaloupe, old pastas, old spices, pumpkins (shells & seeds), onion skins, moldy cheese, banana peels, apple cores, shrimp/crab/lobster shells, egg shells, peanut shells, stale crackers, stale chips, popcorn

Wood chips (the smaller the better) ashes from outdoor fires, grills/smokers & fireplaces
Sawdust & pencil shavings
Tree bark
Dead Houseplants & trimmings, flowers & flower arrangements, peat moss, garden soil, outdated vegetable & flower seeds (paper envelope and all)
Old leather gardening gloves, wallets, watch bands, belts

Is there something that you compost that's not listed here?
