Carrot Harvest

Sunday I harvested all my carrots. They weighed in at 11.5 pounds with the tops on. I'm pretty pleased with the harvest coming from one 3'x6' bed using seeds from 2009 and 2010. These are Scarlet Nantes and Danvers Half Long. I'm hoping to get them processed tonight. Not sure if I will freeze them or pressure can them. I'm leaning to freezing them.

Although I don't care for the taste of these carrots raw, they will be good in stews and casseroles.

I'm planning on planting a fall harvest of Parisienne carrots from seeds that were shared by Jenny of Simple Garden Made Easy.

I'll keep growing and trying different carrots until we find one that grows well in our area and we like the taste of them raw.

If you grow carrots, share with me what type you like.

  1. I see you redesigned your blog again :) Looks like your carrots turned out pretty well too. I planted scarlet nantes, purple dragon and parisienne, but none of them are close to picking because they took too long to wake up. Maybe in a month or so.

    1. Jenny redesigned by error! I think I have it back to almost like it was.

I can't wait to grow and try the parisienne you passed along to me, thank you so much!

  2. What a fantastic carrot harvest! So far I like scarlet nantes the best. In fact I saved seed last year and planted it, only to discover that about half my carrots were actually wild carrots (queen anne's lace). It's still edible, but a little tough for a salad. :)

    2. I've learned that some vegetables just don't taste like what you are used to buying from a store. It taking some experimenting on the carrots. My husband loved both straight out of the garden. Me and my son.... not so much. I'll keep trying till we find one we like.

  3. We always seem to have a hard time getting our carrots to be productive... I think most recently it was due to insufficient watering. Now are garlic is a different story! We've got garlic coming out of our ears! I haven't given up on carrots though.
