Hot Fudge Sunday Cake

Today is my birthday, so I decided to bake me a cake, one of my favorites.

Hot Fudge Sunday Cake

1 c flour
2 Tbl. cocoa
1/4 t. salt
2 Tbl. vegetable oil
3/4 c. sugar
2 t. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
1 t. vanilla

Mix well and pour into a buttered 9x9 pan.

Sprinkle 1 c. brown sugar and 1/4 c. cocoa on top of batter.

Pour 1 1/3 c. very hot water over batter. This will make the sauce.

Bake 35-40 minutes in a 350 degree oven until top is dry.

Here is what it looks like just out of the oven...

The hot fudge settles to the bottom.

Serve warm with vanilla bean ice cream. Spoon sauce from bottom of pan over cake and ice cream.

This cake is a hit around my house. My mother has been serving it ever since I was a little girl. It wasn't until recently that I figured out why. It's so simple, uses no eggs and everything is basic pantry ingredients.

  1. Happy Birthday! I love this cake. We always called it Chocolate Pudding Cake. I never considered pairing it with ice cream, though. I bet that's good!

I have a similar lemon recipe around here somewhere, and also one that makes chocolate sauce, but the cake part is yellow. All of them are delicious.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

    1. Thank you Annie. When the cake is still warm, vanilla ice cream will melt making this one very yummy dessert. I love this recipe, it's quick, simple and so easy.

  2. Hi Lisa,

Belated Happy Birthday - that cake looks delicious, and sounds quite simple. My daughter's 6th birthday is coming up and I feel a hot fudge sunday cake coming on!

BTW, I noticed you joined the linky list over at Sustainable Suburbia - it would be great if you could add a link back in your sidebar. Let me know if you need any help with adding the button, or you could just add the home page to your blogs list if that's easier.
