Living Frugal is Living Green

When I chose to start living a more simple frugal life, I didn’t realize I would be continuing my passion for living green. I’ve learned that frugal living and green living really are a lot alike.

1. Conserving electricity by during daytime, lights in my home are off. I use natural light coming in my windows. Turning up my thermostat during the summer (and wearing less clothes) and down during the winter (wearing more clothes also) I hang certain items over shower curtain bars to dry and other items are only placed in dryer for a very short period and then hung in closet to finish drying. Be conscious of phantom consumption. Saving on your electricity bill is living frugally AND reducing your consumption is living greener!

2. Conserving water by installing simple rain barrels, taking shorter showers and turning water off while sudsing up, brushing our teeth with water off, only washing full loads of clothing, and raising the water level in my toilet tanks is living frugally AND greener!

3. Don’t fall into the consumer trap! Do not buy products that require a constant “refill” or disposables and this will reduce your waste. Try making your own household cleaners. I no longer buy paper plates, paper cups, paper napkins or paper towels. Windows are washed using newspapers and my home-made window cleaner. I have purchased from thrift stores cloth napkins (.29 and .39 each) and kitchen towels (.49-.69 each), and after 6 months have a nice collection! Using a rag or string mop is more frugal, reduces your waste and therefore reduces your carbon print making you greener. I no longer purchase bottles of water. We have a few re-usable water bottles we now use. I no longer buy rags.

4. Old tshirts are cut up for dusting rags, shop rags, and used on my swiffers. Ratty bath towels are also cut up into 4 smaller towels to be used various ways. I think twice before throwing ANYTHING away. Toothbrushes are saved and used for cleaning. A lot of food containers are saved and reused.

5. Recycle as much of your waste as possible. Aluminum cans, plastic milk/juice jugs, and cardboard boxes are recycled in our home reducing our waste.

I heard someone say “It’s not easy being green if you’re poor”. I disagree with this mindset. Yes it costs a big chunk to install solar panels on your home, to buy a new electric/hybrid vehicle, to buy newer energy efficient appliances, etc. The way I am approaching these is this…. When I HAVE to replace a new big ticket item, (my car finally dies, the washer has spun for the last time, the refrig won't chill anymore) I will do my research and buy a more eco friendly product but not until that time.

The majority of the ways listed above does not cost you anything but are the most common first steps experts will tell you to do when wanting to live more frugally or green.

You can get more tips by reading my previous post: 11 Ways to be an Earth Friendly Couple. Another great article to read is Frugal Living Can Be Green Living.

I would love for everyone to share their frugal and/or green tips in comments, it just might be something that someone else has not thought of.

Gourmet's Buttermilk Cake

Fall is approaching fast! Shorter days and very cool nights. I'm feeling the baking itch and one of the first things I will be baking is this so simple, one pan, frugal pantry snack cake.

Who doesn't love a quick & easy cake recipe? And this one is a winner for me due to all the ingredients are found in every pantry. Nothing special other than the fruit you decide to use. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries! Whatever your market has this week can be used.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened
2/3 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg
1/2 cup well-shaken buttermilk
1 cup fresh raspberries (about 5 ounces)

Preheat oven to 400°F with rack in middle. Butter and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Beat butter and 2/3 cup sugar with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes, then beat in vanilla. Add egg and beat well.

At low speed, mix in flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour, and mixing until just combined.

Spoon batter into cake pan, smoothing top. Scatter raspberries evenly over top and sprinkle with remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar.

Bake until cake is golden and a wooden pick inserted into center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack and cool to warm, 10 to 15 minutes more. Invert onto a plate.

The original recipe can be found here: Gourmet June 2009

If you need a gluten free version then Lulu & Phoebe have their version for you here: Lulu & Phoebe's Blog

If you're thinking 400 degrees is hot, read what Stacey did to change up the recipe a little and how she baked it. Stacey Snacks

Do You Save Rubber Bands?

Do you save and repurpose your rubber bands? I do. I use them for lots of different things around the house. Here are some of my favorites:

Use on tight clothing such as waist band on your pants tops or skirts. Loop the rubber band through the button hole and fasten to the button. This saved me during pregnancies to get a few more wears out of clothing.

Where's that straw? Wrap one around your spray can stuff (such as canned air, wd-40) and slide straw underneath.

Use to break-in a baseball glove by spraying glove with leather conditioner and then putting a ball in it and wrapping rubber bands around the whole glove. Let sit for a couple days till dry and shaped.

Wrap rubber bands around shampoo, conditioner bottles and shaving cream cans for slip proofing in the shower.

Winding tightly around a water hose or pipe can temporarily plug small holes.

Wrap a rubber band around the neck of pump style dispensers (such as lotion & soap) to limit the amount dispensed per pump.

Place a rubber band around each end of your chopping boards to prevent them from slipping and sliding around on you.

Wrap around the handle of your chopping knives to keep wet handles from slipping through your hand.

Place around the tops of jars and bottles for a better grip when twisting off lids.

Wrap around the handle of mixing spoons to prevent them from sliding into your bowls.

Place one on each end of your cake pan to secure that plastic lid that always falls off when traveling. Works great on casserole dish lids also.

Roll up partial bags of frozen veggies and secure with a rubber band. No more spilled bags in freezer.

Stretch a couple over paint cans (from top to bottom) to wipe paint brushes against. Paint will drip back down into the can instead of running down sides keeping the can clean and the lid removeable.

Share with me some of your favorite ways to re-use rubber bands?

I've been tagged! 7 Amazing Things About Me

I was tagged by Karen who has two blogs; 100 Mile Diet in Calgary and Green Sheep Herders. Both of these blogs are very interesting and I urge you to visit them.

If I'm not mistaken, 100 Mile Diet's concept is to only eat local foods grown/raised within 100 miles of where you live. With her being located in Calgary, during the winter this can be a real challenge if not planned for ahead of time. This means lots of preserving during the peak growing time to sustain throughout the winter.

Green Sheep Herders concept is to reduce the family's carbon footprint once small change at a time. She has many ideas I've never heard or thought of. Most I agree with, some I dont. (Sorry, Karen but I can't give up my Kitchenaid due to a shoulder injury! :) Like Karen says, not all the suggestions are for everyone, but there are many wonderful ideas and you should check out the neat way she has formatted this blog.

What are 7 amazing things about me?

I'm a lot like Karen and find it hard to brag on myself. These things are accomplishments I'm proud of but others might not find them amazing.

1. I have two healthy sons, one who is now an adult and a father himself. Yes, I'm a grandmother! Both my sons have been raised to be respectful and caring individuals. Although they both are onery as hell, they will give the shirt off their back and the last dollar in their pocket to anyone who needs it.

2. When I was employed I only missed two days of work in 8 years.

3. I live in a very rural area after living in a suburb my entire life and have learned how to "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" after being raised by baby boomer parents who thinks everything is disposable.

4. I am proud of the fact that I have learned how to live better on less when it comes to our monthly living expenses, especially our grocery budget. I spend half as much but my pantry and freezer is four times as full as before. This has been done by learning the correct way to utilize coupons on sale items and stocking up when prices are rock bottom. Tracking sales trends on our most used items helped to figure out when a sale was rock bottom.

5. I am proud of the support I give my husband to do his job. He is required to work 12-14 hour days, so the majority of the daily running of our home is left up to me. Most days I'm ok with it and accomplish everything that needs to be done. I do have bad days once in a while and feel very overwhelmed. Me going from a full time employed mom to a full time stay at home mom was a SHOCK! It has taken all summer for me to adjust to being a 24/7 mom. I've never done that before. I commend all the stay at home moms, they have their work cut out for them.

6. I am proud of the fact that I do not squander my husbands money. I have no desire for designer clothes, shoes, handbags or diamonds. I am a very down to earth woman, and easy to please. I love new clothes, shoes, and handbags. But I buy for comfort and durability not name.

7. I am proud of the eco friendly changes that I have been able to implement in our home and to get my son and husband excited about the changes also. We are a team and enjoy working together to find news ways to become more eco friendly. We currently recycle more of our household waste than we send to the landfill.

Like Karen, I do not judge anyone for the choices they have made, but neither do I like to be judged for the choices I've made. We all live in different areas where some things are easier for some to accomplish than others.

I have chosen not to tag any blogs. If you wish to do this and share with me, then leave a comment so I can visit your blog and read your 7 Amazing Things.

Frugal Summer Fun For Bored Kids Of All Ages

Both my sons have always enjoyed making Paper Airplanes. The price is right and the mess is kept to a minimum.

This site is great! 15 Free Paper Airplanes to print from your computer. I've recycled paper and used the backside I've already printed to print these out, my boys didn't care.

If you don't have a printer available, check out Alex's Paper Airplanes. There are several different planes here with folding instructions.

Here's one of their favorites. The Best Paper Airplane. The instructions are easy to understand and the pics are great.

Newspapers make great paper airplanes as well as pages from old magazines.

Many Moons Washable Cloth Feminine Pads Giveaway

I am so excited to be hosting this giveaway from Many Moons Alternatives for a set of 3 pads and 6 liners!

Did you know:
There are an average of 43 million women in North America menustrating?
The average woman menustrates from age 12-52. (40 years!)
The average woman uses 6 pads/tampons per day for 5 days of each month. That's 30 per month or 360 per year. (are you doing the math here?)
The average woman will use 14,400 pads/tampons in her lifetime.

14,400 PER WOMAN! That's one huge pile of waste filling landfills.

The benefits of using cloth mama pads is not just the ecological benefit. The benefits for us as mamas are great also. The greatest benefits I have found is less chafing, less yeast infections and less cramping.

The winner will get to choose which size you'd like. Many Moons offers these sizes:

7 1/2" youth pad
9" mini pad
11" regular/maxi pad
13" goodnight pad

Wild- vibrant, fun, usually darker prints and solids. With sewn in leak-proof nylon.

Fabric colors/patterns are varied and subject to change without notice.

Other Uses:
Postpartum - Many Moons are great for postpartum care, because they are so soft and gentle on tender skin. We recommend the Goodnight pad and Regular-Maxi pads for postpartum.
Incontinence - Many Moons pads are also ideal for light-moderate incontinence protection. We suggest using 2 liners to provide optimal absorbency.

Just choose a pad length that is right for you.
