Silhouette SD vs Cricut Expression

I'm tired of my Sizzix machine. It is so outdated. Buying the dies for it is becoming harder and harder.

There are tons of projects I want to do and so many Christmas gifts I could make and a new digital cutting machine would make life much easier.

But which one is the best?

The Cricut Expression?

OR

The Silhouette SD?

Do you have either the Cricut or the Silhouette SD? Have any of you had a chance to do a review on either? Which one do you think is better and why? Also I would love to see some of your projects! Fill my comment box up with your opinions and projects!

  1. I'm not into paper crafts, but Shane's step-mom is. I'm curious to see what others have to say so I might be able to get gift ideas for her.

  2. Depends on what you like. The Cricut comes with cartridges that are really expensive and have really cute designs but you're limited to what the cartridge has to offer on it. The Silhouette is a more computer based machine that allows you to download premade designs OR create your own. You can also cut out any font you have installed on your computer. So, it's all about preference. I have a Silhouette but I love to be on my computer creating stuff. Hope this helps!

  3. I have used the cricut. We are actually waiting for the new software we have ordered to go along with it. It is called Sure Cuts A Lot. I have read great reviews on this. It will allow you to print anything you want including fonts and images off the internet, which means no cartridges needed.

  4. Annie what type of paper crafts does she do?

Sandy The cartridges for the cricut is my big issue. After paying the initial cost for the machine, I don't want to have to pay for more cartridges that I don't get to choose what is on them. Is the silhouette downloads easy to use?

Jackie how much was the additional software?

  5. Yes, my issue were the cartridges also. Silhouette has new software that is really cool. I'm still learning how to use it but it's not rocket science. I also have a subscription on the download store and I can download up to $25 worth of images (they're 99 cents each usually) for only $9 a month. And the credits roll over if you don't use them up within the 30 days. It's been great and the mats and blades are not that expensive to replace when need be. (I get them from Amazon instead of the Silhouette store- amazon is cheaper) I have had my silhouette for a while and I just now got new mats. I have yet to have to replace the blade but it's not like I use it every day. Hope this helps!

  6. Oh, and one more thing! Don't get rid of your Sizzix! Quickutz has super cute/super cheap dies that you can use with your sizzix as well. I think you still need to have a manual die cutter for a "quick fix". So, I'd keep it if I were you. I have the Big Kick and I love it. I also purchased the Epic six (Quickut's version of the sizzix that works as an embosser, die cutter and letterpress all in one) Sadly, I have yet to use it. I wonder if I'll ever have time to play with all of my toys ;) Anyway, I'd love to know what you decide.
