Tuesday there was no broccoli. Only huge leaves. Saturday this is what we had.
It is now bigger than my hand!
It amazes me the rate vegetables grow. One day nothing and it seems like overnight it has grown 10 times it's size.
It is very dry here. I spent Saturday weeding, which was easy but time consuming. Once I was done I finished mulching everything with straw. With the dry conditions around here, I applied the straw very thick to conserve moisture, and then deep watered everything, trying to save on the water bill as much as possible, BUT not loose all the money and hard work that has already went into the garden.
I really need to get more rain barrels set up. We are hopefully going to get more rain later this week.
Do you use rain barrels or just water from the hose not worrying about the cost of water?
Awesome! Isn't it nice to have fresh veggies grow right in front of your eyes? I hope you'll like the taste because it's usually different from the store bought - it actually taste like a broccoli and not like grass :)
ReplyDeleteI hope we like it too! I grew two types of carrots and they definitely didn't taste like anything you buy in the store.
Deletep.s. we're on our own well so not paying for watter, but I do have rain barrels.
ReplyDeleteI gotta get more barrels. My source I called this spring isn't getting them any more. :(
DeleteSo cool! I've never tried growing broccoli yet, but it sure is a favorite here. :-) Still trying to find time to start my garden... so late this year!

Jill gardening is time consuming. I learned that I had to make it priority over some other things. It's not easy.
DeleteWe use the rain barrels first, but will water from the city supply if we have to. We now have four 250-gallon barrels set up to catch rain from our gutters. I think we may have one extra to sell if you're interested. It's one of those white cube type with an aluminum cage around it. If you are interested, let me know via email and I'll talk to Shane about it. Last I knew he was wanting to sell it, but he may have changed his mind.
