Organic Grocery Deals: Buying Green On A Budget

"If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. That's not gallons, but barrels." ~ Steven L. Hopp,

That's really something to think about. 1.1 million barrels every week in exchange for 1 organic meal!

  1. i think local & seasonal eating might be more important than organic in terms of saving fossil fuel......it's great to buy organic, but it's not saving much if all your veggies are flown/driven 2,000 miles in refrigerated vehicles first.

  2. In the summer, I tend to buy my fruits and the bulk of my veggies from local farmers. It's good for the local economy, uses less fuel, and nothing beats the taste of super-fresh produce!

  3. queen I agree, eating season/local is the best way to go. I try to do that when our farmers market is open, but it's only open for about 6 months out of the year.

chicago ditto. I did notice one of my supermarkets is now carrying produce from the amish farms not too far away. But they arent growing anything this time of year either.

  4. Lisa,

I just wanted to thank you for the great OGD plug! It's always nice to see our members spreading the word.

I'm in the same boat with not much locally grown produce available in the winter months. But we do always try to buy local when we can, and the natural grocer has organic produce available from the closest farms available during the winter months which is a huge plus!

Thanks again for spreading the word!
