I planted 4 broccoli and 4 cauliflower this weekend as well as a few more tomatoes. I've never grown broccoli or cauliflower so we will see how we do. Have any of you ever grown either? Is there anything I should know?
The Yukon Gold potates are growing fast. It's almost time to cover them with some more compost.

Another new addition this year was the two Suffolk Red Seedless Grape plants. They are growing at a very fast pace.
An unexpected! Volunteer potatoe from last year. It is bigger than the rest probably because of it's 12 month jump start on the others. We will see how many potatoes it actually produces in the end.

The ten bare root strawberry plants I planted previously have done nothing. I had a lot of room left in that bed so I bought 4 everbearing and 2 June bearing plants and added them. Two days later they are looking great!
A couple of the tomatoes that were planted last weekend. They are growing and looking good. There may be a chance of frost later this week so I'll have to watch the weather closely.
How is your gardens growing? Did you plant anything new this weekend?
Love growing broccoli but you need to watch for white butterfly that land and place eggs - they'll be large green caterpillars that will try to eat it down to the stub. They start as tiny so they're hard to spot but they grow fast and will demolish your crops very fast. Also your grapes will need a trellis - it grows fast and will spread long branches that can't support itself.
ReplyDeletelove your volunteer potato - can't wait to see what it produces. And tomatoes are growing nicely. I'm actually thinking of moving mine under tent and see if they'll make it, but we're still in low 30's at night so they might die off.
I also planted lots of things this weekend, including two more fig bushes, more asparagus, and tons of flowers.
Jenny hubby has the stuff to make the grape vine trellis, he'll put it up in the next couple days.
DeleteI definitely need to plant more asparagus also.
We grew cauliflower a couple of years ago. Once they form heads you have to keep an eye on them to make sure the leaves that cover the heads stay covering them. You want to keep the sun off the heads so they stay white. You may have to resort to tying up the outer leaves to keep the heads covered. Aphids love cauliflower as do cabbage worms since it's in the Brassicaceae family.
ReplyDeleteslugmama thanks for that info! I had no idea about that one.
DeleteWow, your garden is really coming along nicely! We have uprooted our backyard for a current project so no garden work is being done yet, ugh. I'm eager to grow my own foods.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Blessings,
Jill
I hope you will be able to start before too much longer.
