Garden update

All the rain we received in the last week has really helped my garden!

I've never grown broccoli or cauliflower before. They seem to be doing well, no little balls yet though.

My yukon gold potatoes are growing like weeds. I hope they are making lots and lots of potatoes! It's hard for me to wait because I can't see them growing all covered in dirt!

My tomatoes definietly got a head start this year. I normally don't plant them until Mother's day weekend.

Carrots are growing so well this year. It's the first year I will actually get some. I'm hoping they are not woody or bitter tasting.

It was time to add the second layer onto my potato boxes. These potatoes are Red Pontiacs that require hilling as they grow. I'm excited to see the results from these boxes! We've been using FREE reclaimed lumber (FREE does not suck! ;D ) and the FREE compost when it's time to add more soil. It takes LOTS of soil/compost when hilling them in these boxes. I think our boxes are bigger than other's who use this method.

I need to try to get some more compost, I've made a huge dent in the pile that was delivered last year. Gardening is so much more than just sticking seeds/plants in the ground!

    1. Jenny I hope we have some baby potatoes in June. I know my grandmother always did around that time because she cooked them with her home grown peas. Creamed peas and potatoes.....YUMMMY!

  2. Your gardens look so tidy! And your cauliflower and broccoli look great! Did you put anything on them to keep them bug free? Ours got so bug eaten that we gave up, pulled them and will try again in fall (I've had good luck with them in fall anyway).

We put tomatoes out last night, but already had a few volunteering in some spots. We're going to try to plant corn and beans this weekend.

    1. Annie I try very hard to be organic. But it seems every year I have to resort to Seven Dust. The reason I resort to it is because by the time bugs starting eating my veggies, they are already so late into their growing stage I don't want to loose them (money buying plants and time) and it's too late to start over. I try hard to use organic methods first, but I have no qualms about resorting to Seven to save them. It's the only thing I will put on my garden for pests though.

To answer your question, no I havnt dusted the broccoli or cauliflower.....yet. No bugs there... yet. But I had to dust my strawberries and tomatoes last night. Dusting my tomatoes I don't worry about. After I dusted the strawberries I thought about it and I'm thinking I will pick all the strawberried currently on the plants off and throw them away. My strawberried have something eating on them (the strawberries not the plant) and I cant figure out what. Do you have any idea? Ants?
