Skyrocketing Potato Prices

Around here, 5lbs of russet potatoes cost $4.99. It's outrageous. Is your potato prices gone through the roof?

This week Aldi's has 10lbs russet potatoes on sale for $1.99.

I price matched them at Wal-Mart getting a couple of bags that will last us a while.

  1. I haven't bought potatoes for a couple of months. I think I saw 5 lbs. for either $3.49 or $3.99 at HyVee last weekend. Still too high for my blood. Somehow I missed the $1.99 sale at Aldi, although I was there Saturday. We've been eating a lot of pasta and rice instead.

BTW, I didn't know Wal-Mart would price match things that aren't a nationally advertised name brand. Good to know.

  2. I hate to say it, but I don't feel the potato increase. Because I just bought a 50# bag of potatoes for just $16.95. This time of the year they are great prices around here, so I am making as much as I can with potatoes.

    Blessings,
    Ronnie

  3. Wow! I did a little research and it seems there is a shortage of potatoes due to the record high temps in the NW last year. The heat stunted the growth causing a lot of misshapen spuds. It also says they don't expect the new fall crop to get any better because there are 7-9% less potato crops planted this year.

  4. Wow, that is quite a lot. I know that the regular prices at Safeway and Raley's here have always been quite high -- $4 plus. I used to buy a 10 pound bag for $1.28, but now it's more like $1.98 at my discount store.

  5. Sadly our prices are just as high. I love potatoes and can eat them every day but now have to limit myself to weekends only.

  6. Our potato prices (around here)are just fine. Just got a 5lb bag a few weeks ago for .99 with a great store coupon. They are already back on "sale" for 2.50, which means 1.99 a bag(my usual rock bottom) is just around the corner.

  9. I_am_4given I could never buy 50lbs and use them before they went bad. I have tried different ways to store with no success. How do you store them?

  10. precious thanks for the info! I was just chalking it up to high fuel prices. Which I'm sure has had a play in it, but not the total blame.

  11. rachel My normal price here up until a couple months ago was $1.99 for 10lbs also. Now the last time I checked where I normally buy them it's $6.99 for 10lbs. So when I seen I could price match Wally for $1.99 I went there. Wally's 5lb is $5.99, I have no idea what my other store is at today.

  13. That explains it. We don't get the Sunday paper, but the Aldi ad was in the grocery ads that are thrown to non-newspaper subscribers on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. :)
