It took greasy grime off two crocks on my counter, one is used to hold my spatulas and spoons, the other holds cooking grease. I have ran these two crocks through the dishwasher many times before and they didn't come this clean!

I also sanitized all my cutting boards, my hubby's two coffee mugs that he won't let me run through the dishwasher (do you know how many germs an unwashed coffee mug harbors? double ewww!)my dishrag & sponge and our toothbrushes! I even sprayed door knobs all around the house before moving to the bathrooms!

All the fixtures in the bathrooms sparkled after their treatment and then I sprayed the floor and used my swiffer with a microfiber cloth to mop. The floor looked wonderful and the whole bathroom smelled so fresh!

The Lotus LSR100 eliminates germs and pesticides from your food also. It even extends the shelf life of fruit and produce. My lettuce has lasted a lot longer so far. With all the salmonella recalls on spinach and lettuce, in the last year (not to mention the peanut butter and eggs) it gives me peace of mind knowing I'm serving my family produce that is safe. I dumped the water from the bowl on my potted flowers. A friend of mine says her plants love the extra super charged water!

I found the system very easy to use and the bottle easy to operate as far as how the trigger fit my hand and the amount of pressure to squeeze the trigger. Having arthritis in my hands makes it difficult at times to use certain spray bottles that are hard to squeeze.

Walgreens Now Has A Coupon Policy In Writing!

Finally, Walgreens has their coupon policy in writing and on their website. You may view the full version here: WALGREENS COUPON POLICY

~When items are featured in a Buy a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased. (This means, you can use two coupons on these deals, even another B1G1 Free coupon with the B1G1 Free promotion to get both for free – the value will not be less than $0.00).

So go over to Walgreens and print the policy off to keep in your coupon binder. Keep in mind these policies are new for a lot of the cashiers/managers, it will take them a while to learn like it did when you first started shopping with coupons.

The Beauty of Peppers

Look at all those beautiful colors.



Growing peppers is my favorite thing to grow next to tomatoes. At the begininng of the season they are all green, as the season ages, so does the peppers' color.

It really upsets me when I have a bad year for peppers like year before last and the year before that. We use a lot of peppers when cooking in the fall and winter. I'm so happy they did so well this year.



To preserve my peppers I wash them, lay them out on a towel on the counter so they can air dry. Then I bag them in ziplock freezer bags. They are easy to pull from the bag in the quantity we need.

Is anyone else's garden still giving? I'm thinking about planting some fall crops. Are any of you going to be planting anything soon?

Target Clearance Deals

I had to go to the city to find my son a special calculator for math that neither local Wal-Marts had. I stopped into Target to check out their clearance clothing deals.

Hubby was needing more work shorts and I found these on clearance for $5 each. I picked up three pairs.


I love shopping end of season clothing sales. The prices are so cheap I can get 3 or 4 pieces for the price of one. This saves my family so much money shopping like this!

They had a great sale on down alternative comforters and duvet sets for $16 each. I've been wanting to redecorate son's room so I picked up these:

A white down alternative comforter

And a black duvet set to put the down alternative comforter in.

Then I stopped by Wal-Mart on my way home and picked up paint. My goal is to have his room totally repainted, bed frame changed and the bed dressed by the time he gets home. I'm painting the walls grey, the bed will be dressed in the black and accents of red and orange. Wish me luck he likes it!

I also seen a great cd game, Jonas Brothers, on clearance at Wal-Mart for $3. I picked one up for my oldest granddaughter for Christmas. I have a lot more Christmas shopping to do this year with the three new granddaughters in my life. But I'm excited to have girls to buy for for a change!

Shopping the clearance deals takes time and self control due to being in the stores so often. You have to be able to resist other non-necessary purchases.

Now is the time to watch for summer clearance deals on clothes and toys!

What is your latest great deal?

The ONLY Way To Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

The idea of ice cream cone cupcakes has been around for, uhmmmm, as my kiddo would put it.... decades! lol

I've baked them a few times before for both my sons and it always didn't go as well as the recipe would have you believe it should/would. There are several different methods.

There was the Betty Crocker method (found HERE) that had several problems. Some were top heavy, some of the cones did not "stick" to the batter and had to have the cake "glued" to the cone after baking.

There was the "mini muffin" method, (found here) where you bake mini cupcakes in your mini pan then put the cooked cupcake in a cone, and decorate. When the kids ate them it was a mess! The cupcakes didn't stay in the cone too well.

Then there is the method that has been around for "decades" and Paula Dean likes it. It can be found here. The first time years ago when I baked these and placed them on a cookie sheet, it was disaster with a captial D! Trying to get the filled cupcakes into the oven with out any falling over wasn't easy...BUT after they were in the oven and started baking they have a tendency to fall over also. The cake will bake up until it hits the ridge of the cone then most "tops" fall to one side, causing the cone to fall over.

My attempt at these this past Saturday for my grandson's birthday was the best so far. Leave it to Martha to show us the correct way to do it! lol
Remove center of a 12-inch tube pan and cover pan with a double layer of heavy-duty foil. Use a skewer or paring knife to poke 12 small holes in the foil, 2 1/2 inches apart. Gently place a cone in each hole, pushing it down until only about 1 inch of cone is showing.

I adapted Martha's method to my liking. I covered my 9x13 pan in a DOUBLE layer of foil, used a skewer to poke the holes and stuck my cones in.

I used a Duncan Hines cupcake mix that I had picked up from CVS for FREE using Extra Care Bucks, a tub of Pillsbury frosting that came with sprinkles and Keebler ice cream flat bottomed cones.



Be sure to only fill them up about 3/4 full or they will bake over the cone, make a mess and your cone will not stand up!



Here they are all baked. See how all but one of the tops fell to one side as the cake down in the cone baked and rose?



All frosted and ready for the kiddos! To ice them I used a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off, placed a plastic star tip I saved from a tube of icing a few years ago and piped my soft serve ice cream frosting on top. The kids loved them!

Saving You Money: Frugal Frontline Plus Treatments

Having several pets can get expensive to treat with Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks.

That is if you don't know the frugal secrets for using Frontline Plus!

My dog groomer (now ex-groomer... I do my own grooming to save money!) let me in on this great secret and my vet confirmed it.

When you purchase the 3 packs of Frontline Plus for the smaller dogs and cats, the majority of your hard earned money is going towards packaging, not the solution.

The secret is to buy the 4.02ml tube for large dogs (89-132lbs) and measure out the appropriate amount for your pet yourself.

She told me her vet told her (and I've been doing the same for two years now) to open the large tube/tubes and squeeze into a glass vial, tube or small jar that has a lid. Then using a plastic syringe (with NO NEEDLE) like that is used to give cats and babies medicine orally, measure out the correct individual dose for each pet. Store the remainder until needed.

The large tube of medication (for dogs 89-132lbs) is the EXACT medication that is found in the boxes with the smaller individual doses. The only difference is the liquid volume that you give.

All Frontline Plus for dogs formula (regardless of size of animal) contains 9.8% Fipronil and 8.8% Methoprene. Frontline Plus for cats contains the same amount of Fipronil and 11.8% Methoprene which is more than what is in the dogs and is perfectly safe for your cat. IT IS NOT SAFE TO DOSE DOGS WITH THE CAT FORMULA THOUGH!

Here is a chart showing how much (volume) solution is in each one dose tube when you purchase the 3, 6, or 12 packs and the average cost of EACH one dose tube.

Dogs 1-22 lbs. 0.67 ml solution in each tube, $11.33 per dose
Dogs 23-44 lbs. 1.34 ml solution in each tube, $12.00 per dose
Dogs 45-88 lbs. 2.68 ml solution in each tube, $12.34 per dose
Dogs 89-132 lbs. 4.02 ml solution in each tube, $12.67 per dose
Cats All Weights 0.50 ml solution in each tube, $11.33 per dose

One of the large 4.02ml tubes is enough for both my indoor cats for 4 months! Each cat gets .50ml per month of the 4.02ml tube. My vet sells these 4.02ml tubes individually for $14. Fourteen dollars to treat two cats for four months! That saves me over $76. That's not pocket change!

One large tube is enough for both my poodles (they use the 1-22lbs dosage) for 3 months. $14 to treat two poodles for three months! That is a savings of $54.

As you can see, this method will allow you to save a ton of money and throw away less waste!

The Attraction to Cardboard Boxes

Have you ever bought your child a gift you just knew they would love only to have them play with it for a day or so, set it aside and play with the cardboard box forever?

Both my boys did that on numerous occasions when they were little. My husband use to say, why worry about what to get them. They are going to play with the box more. Just go to the grocery store and get them a banana box! lol

I know for a fact my boys are not the only ones to do this.

Peanut does it too!

All I have to say is she better take good care of that box cause I normally don't buy bottled water, but due to the excessive heat and warnings, I had to pick up a case last week for free using my CVS extra care bucks. Hubby needed some extra water to supplement his usual water jug. lol

Getting ready for Back To School: Preparing Breakfasts

Buying frozen pancakes seems silly to me. I make my own and freeze them. It's really simple.

Cook your pancakes like you normally would. Lay your cooked pancakes out on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper in a single layer to cool.

Once the pancakes are totally cool, I stack them with a piece of wax paper in between each, then place them in a plastic bag. I've used saved cereal bags, bread wrappers as well as ziplock freezer bags.

Then in the mornings before school, I can quickly pull out as many as I need and microwave them for a healthy quick breakfast for my son.

When I make pancakes for all of us on the weekends, I invariably have left over batter. I go ahead and cook it into pancakes, let them cool, wrap, bag 'em and then throw in freezer. This way I am replenishing my supply all the time and I don't have to have a big Pancake Making Day very often!

My garden is still growing.....

Sunday, while the kiddos were doing their scavenger hunt, I canned more Hot pepper relish. 6 pints, 4 half pints, 1 quart, and 1 quart 3/4 full.



After the kids were done with the scavenger hunt, Grandpa took them with their bags out to the garden to help pick more veggies. They came in with two dozen more jalapenos, several gypsy peppers, half dozen tomatoes, one bag full of cucumbers and one bag half full of okra. The second bag of okra there was picked Saturday as well as the cantaloupe.





All this still needs my attention. ughhhhh Boy when the garden decides to grow, it decides to grow, doesn't it?

I'm out of pint jars and lids. I've never canned this much before in one year. I usually freeze everything. I need to check with my mother to see what jars, if any, she has for me.

My totals for canning so far are:

Pickles: 7 quarts, 1 pint
Salsa: 1 quart, 14 pints, 7 half pints
Relish: 2 quarts, 8 pints, 14 half pints, 2 jelly size

What peppers I havn't used in the salsa and relish I have froze. I have two 1 gallon bags of jalapenos and 1 quart bag of serranos.

My tomatoes are slowing down. These are the only thing I DON'T want to slow down!

I have to get the okra washed and froze today. We've been picking okra all along. What we havn't ate, we have given away because I just had too much all at once.

All the cucumbers that were picked yesterday, hubby wants done in more pickles.

{sigh} and I really need to get out to the garden right now.

But I have to run to the bank and take my youngest son to the doctor. Today is my sis' birthday, I need to call her and I still havn't gotten my Sunday papers.

Am I allowed to say, "I'm tired"!

Weekend Frugal Fun

This weekend was a BUSY one!

I spent my Saturday morning moving the weight bench and drums out of a bedroom and into a storage room in the basement. Then I sat up two twin beds in the bedroom, along with a tv, vcr and dvd player for my granddaughters.

My oldest son, daughter-n-law and my four grandchildren came for an overnight visit. Keeping so many people in such a wide age range happy, busy having fun and well fed without breaking the bank can be a challenge won with a little planning. Here's some of what we did.



We went swimming. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you all. We bought an Intex pool around the 10th of July. I wanted one, but I've heard how much work & expense they can be from my sister-n-law and mother-n-law who both has had ag pools. I did a lot of research on line. I found that you don't need to buy all those expensive chemicals.

We use the Three B's Method. Bleach, Baking Soda & Borax. Easy to find, and couldn't be cheaper. I've had no problems and it's been over a month with rain, hot humid weather, etc. See how clear my water is?
Cost: No extra cost above what we already do daily. The daily maintenance cost is $1 for bleach.



My daughter-n-law organized a Scavenger Hunt. Here she is with the three little ones (Landon 4, Reagan 5, Kennice 4) right before they start hunting. My oldest granddaughter, Taylor (who is 9) couldn't make up her mind if she was going to hunt with them or not. They had such a blast and was begging to do it again.

We played Wii. Bowling, Golf, Mario Bros., Guitar Hero. All the kids, had a blast. My 4 year old grandson beat his daddy at bowling. He was so excited. It was great!

We watched movies. My son brought a couple of dvd movies his dad and I hadn't seen from his huge collection.

The kiddos watched Buzz Light Year. One of my youngest son's favorites when he was little and they hadn't seen it. It's fun to pull out my two son's movies (on vcr tape! lol) for the little ones to watch. It's like brand new to them.
Cost: NONE

The meals were kept quick & easy this weekend.

Saturday evening I cooked a big pot of taco/burrito hamburger meat and pan fried grilled chicken strips. My two sons like chicken tacos. DIL fed the kids when they got hungry, and then us adults ate whenever we were hungry.

After they ate dinner and swam, we lit a fire in the fire pit and made smores. The little ones always love to make smores at grandma's house. That's the advantage of living in the country... we can light a fire when we want and we can shoot off fireworks whenever we want, but shhhhhhh....... don't tell them about the fireworks. They havn't realized that yet! lol

Sunday breakfast DIL baked biscuits, fried sausage, and make a wonderful sausage gravy. Some ate sausage & biscuits, some ate jelly & buscuits, some ate biscuits and gravy..... and one ate it all, I won't name who! lol (and no it wasn't me)

Sunday lunch was left overs. Tacos, biscuit sandwiches with black forest ham, bicuits & gravy.... whatever they wanted.

It was a great weekend visiting with them! I even did some more canning yesterday while they were busy with their scavenger hunt. I'll post about it later.

My Friday

I've been busy all this week getting kiddos ready for school. Finishing up the school supply shopping. I also did a little clothing shopping. My boys have never really been big on getting a bunch of new clothes before school starts. They usually want to shop in October. So I just bought kiddo three new shirts and three new shorts. He will wear shorts probably up to and possibly into November. We will shop for jeans then. So I now have him ready and I bought my two granddaughters their school supplies. It was easy, and I got most of it from the CVS and Walgreen sales. The rest I picked up dirt cheap from Wal-Mart.

Tuesday I went to Hyvee and picked up a few things. I wanted the Backpack and lunch box deal. The Hyvee I went to had neither. They gave me rain checks and told me to check back today. When I called they still didn't have them. So I started calling around. Found both at the Lees Summit store.

I went and picked them up along with several Friday 13th sale items. Prices after using my coupons: Skippy Peanut Butter $.49, Miracle Whip $1.38, Sunbelt Granola bars $.67, Pepsi $.69, Kraft Salad Dressing $.88, Prego Spag Sauce $.49.

Then I came home and did this:



Yep, 7 more pints of salsa. I finally was done at 8pm. See that white film on my lids. I'm guessing it is due to our hard water. Maybe a calcium deposit? Can anyone tell me what I can do to keep it from doing this? Can I add something to my water in my canner? I never had this problem where I used to live.

I still needed to do more relish, so guess what I'll be doing here in about 7 hours, once I finally go to bed? You guessed it! Canning relish. I also need to get out to the garden.... I'm sure there is more waiting.

Canning Salsa, Pickles & Sweet Pepper Relish Recipes

I've had several of you ask for the recipes I used when I canned my pickles, salsa and sweet pepper relish. I hope this will answer all your questions. Let me know if you have any more, I'll be glad to help all I can.



KOSHER DILL PICKLES
The pickles I canned was made using a 6.5 ounce package of Mrs Wages Kosher Dill Pickle Quick Process mix that was sent home to me by one of my husband's coworkers wife. She had stapled a note on it to add 1 clove of garlic and 1 tsp of dill seed to each pint jar, then add cucumber spears, then fill with the Mrs Wages pickle solution. You cook the pickle solution just like the directions on package states. This can be found at Wal-mart and I also found it at my Price Chopper.

The package says 9-11 pounds of cucumbers. BULL! I had about 4 pounds of cucumbers and barely had enough solution for the last jar. You can only pack cucumbers so tight, when they are speared. If you decide to slice them into chips, then maybe you will need 9-11 pounds.

SALSA
Our salsa recipe is different every time we make it due to: we use what we have grown and have on hand. I generally always start with 6 cups of chopped up (almost pureed) tomatoes. It will take about 10-12 medium size tomatoes. When canning salsa, everything is cooked on mediom low and I cook mine down for about 30 minutes, bring it back up to a boil and then fill my hot jars, and process in a water bath for 20 minutes. The difference in her recipe and mine is:
I do not use banana or green peppers in mine (remember hubby hates green peppers)I use extra jalapenos (depending upon if I'm making mild or hot) and gypsy peppers-if I have them. This year we grew serrano peppers and I used them in my hot salsa. Normally we grow ceyenne peppers, so in the past I have used them. On the milder version I only use a few jalapenos that I have de-seeded and deveined.

PLEASE WEAR GLOVES WHEN PREPARING ANY HOT PEPPER! The oil is impossible to remove from your hands (and after a while your hands will be on fire) but EASY to transfer to your very SENSITIVE body bits! ;) and your eyes.

I don't like vinegar in it and I dont add it. This year I didn't put any sugar in it. My tomatoes were sweet enough for us and we don't need the added sugar in our diet.

We love cilantro in ours. I use fresh if I have it, if I don't then I will add about 4 tablespoons of dried.

On the vinegar thing, they say to add it due to the canning process needing the acidity. My salsa really doesnt last long enough to worry about it. I've been making it this way for the 18 years hubby and I have been married. Lots of canning rules have changed in the last 15 years. The vinegar does change the taste to me. But they do say to add it. Take it for what it's worth.

SWEET JALAPENO RELISH
Here is the recipe I used to make my Sweet Jalapeno Relish. I highly recommend it! The only thing different I did was I used my gypsy peppers instead of buying a red bell pepper.

I like recipes that don't require a huge amount of produce at once since I don't grow a huge traditional garden. If you have a recipe you would like to share that uses tomatoes, cucumbers, or peppers please share it with me and the other readers!

The Heat is On....

In more ways than one! It's been extemely hot here with heat advisories everyday and heat indexes of 105 to 110.

I'm still canning two or three times a week. Here I canned more Salsa and Hot Pepper Relish. They (hubby and his friends) told me the salsa and relish could be even hotter so this batch has tons of jalapeno and serrano peppers.

I knew hubby wanted to take some to work for several of the guys, so I decided not to give up my regular canning jars, knowing they more than likely would never come back home. lol I save all kinds of jars. I like to store things in them, ya know? Do any of you save jars? Hubby says I'm a hoarder. I say I'm smart! Just look at this...



The boullion cube jars, relish jars, taco sauce jars, etc. were perfect for me to fill up and him to give away. It saved me the cost of my regular mason jars and lids. Knowing the guys would be eating it right away and there was no need to actually process it in a water bath saved me time also.

Here's my harvest this morning. Not much is slowing down in my garden. I'll have to process more salsa. I need to check and see how much of the hot pepper relish we have left, not sure if I'll make more of it or not. How much is enough relish? lol I can always give it away at the holidays I guess.



I'm out of here to make me a cold refreshing fresh limeade. Hubby was given these last night:



And told me when he stops by his favorite joint tonight, the guys told him they should have a case of limes for him. So I'll be juicing for the next couple days making lime concentrate to freeze for limeades when ever we want. Take that SONIC!
